Dismissed employees of the Ibadan Distribution Electricity Company (IBEDC), took to the streets of Ibadan in a large-scale protest, declaring their dismissals unjust and calling for immediate reinstatement.
The demonstration effectively paralysed traffic, as protesters blocked key routes from Challenge to Dugbe, significantly impacting vehicular movement.
The aggrieved workers were supported by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which has been vocal about broader labour concerns, including the demand for minimum wage payments for over 3,000 employees still with the company.
The protesters emphasised their determination to fight for their rights amid what they deemed unfair treatment by the management.
While addressing the protesters, Kayode Martins, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Oyo State Chapter, strongly condemned the outsourcing agents responsible for the dismissals.
He pointed out their failure to pay minimum wages and the unexplained deductions from salaries, which have compounded the financial distress faced by the workers.
Martins urged Governor Seyi Makinde and other stakeholders to intervene, warning that ignoring the plight of the dismissed employees could lead to significant security risks in the state.
He stressed the importance of swift action to prevent escalating tensions, adding that: “The situation is dire. We must not allow the unjust dismissal of these workers to go unchallenged. Their reinstatement is not just a matter of fairness but essential for the stability of our community.”
He appealed to IBEDC management, saying: “We urge you to come forward and engage in dialogue to resolve these issues amicably. Ignoring this situation will only lead to a crisis that no one wants.”
In a swift reaction, the management of IBEDC, in a statement made available to journalists, clarified that the dismissed staff are not employees of IBEDC.
The statement read: “The management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) wishes to address the protest that occurred today at our Head Office, involving a group of former PIPLL staff. We would like to clarify that these individuals are not employees of IBEDC.”
“IBEDC has engaged PIPLL to ensure a swift resolution of the issue. We remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of staff welfare across our entire franchise.’
